Abstract

The marching trend of the new economic order has generated a new capsule of Six Sigma as a unified approach to process excellence. The main thrust of Six Sigma is to reduce the errors and waste in every kind of business endeavor to please the customers and fatten the bottom line. In the past few years, successful cases of Six Sigma implementation have been reported in numerous manufacturing industries and by applying this Six Sigma philosophy from industry to academia, the results may provide a wonderful methodology to solve many serious problems of technical education. This paper shows how the Six Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analysis, Improve, Control) methodology can be effectively implemented in an engineering institute, taking a specific case of improving the passing rate of students.
